The Armstrong Report: Aftershocks

The French newspaper L’Equipe, the paper which first printed the Lance-Armstrong-was-doping-in-1999 story after last year’s Tour de France completed, says that despite a new report issued this week clearing Armstrong’s name, they’re sticking by their story. In an editorial, they said:

“There is nothing to retract from the revelations. For our part, we remain convinced of the need to battle without compromise against the mafia-like tendencies that still and always threaten the sport of cycling. Both in the method and the substance, L’Equipe stands firm.”

The UCI, which yesterday sounded seriously peeved that the report had been leaked to the press before being delivered to the, today says that it supports the findings, and that “this report exposes the irregularities committed by WADA.”

So, how’s WADA taking it? Not well. Not well at all.

In its statement, it “completely rejected” the report and “expressed its astonishment that the UCI would expect anyone to have the slightest confidence in the objectivity, methodology, analysis or conclusions of such a report, especially since UCI had had more than six weeks during which to review the draft report and to correct the many factual errors contained in it.”

Oh, but there’s more.

In a move that seems more like the typically litigious American society than I think WADA would care to admit, it says that its “preliminary conclusion is that the report is defamatory to the Agency, its officers and employees, as well as the accredited laboratory involved. WADA has taken legal advice regarding its recourses against the investigator and any organization, including UCI, that may publicly adopt its conclusions.”

I think it’s pretty fair to say that this isn’t over by a long shot.
