Lance: Rubbing Salt in Open French Wounds

Somehow it seems fitting that I’m writing this blurb about Lance Armstrong in a coffeeshop where Sheryl Crow’s “My Favorite Mistake” plays in the background. I swear, I’m not making this up.

At any rate, you might recall that Mr. Armstrong had originally said that he wasn’t going to set foot in France this year for the Tour because of his ongoing fued with Tour organizers, the L’Equipe newspaper, the Le Monde newspaper and various and sundry other people. After the “Operacion Puerto” doping scandal broke, however, Armstrong said that he would come to the Tour to support the sport and the race in its time of need, fueds or no fueds. Well, after his recent comments as part of his ESPY-hosting gig, methinks he’ll have even more fueds on his hands.

During one of his monologues, Armstrong was discussing the French team’s loss at the World Cup on penalty kicks, after team captain Zinedine Zidane’s infamous headbutt heard ’round the world. “All their players tested positive,” Armstrong said, “for being assholes.” Ahem.

As Eurosport puts it, “Though one of many jokes he made as the show’s host, the French have little sense of humor about their beloved Bleus, especially from the Texan, who has faced doping charges from French media outlets and the nation’s scorn for years.” Armstrong was set to arrive at the Tour finish in Gap today.
