Is Armstrong running for something, or from something?

Last year when Lance Armstrong retired, he got asked by every reporter who stuck a microphone in his face whether he was going to go into politics. He was noncommital. I have to admit, I’m now thinking that he’s rehearsing for a future life as a politician. Don’t believe me? Read on, and then decide.

Armstrong has canceled plans to be in France for the Tour this year. Now, that may not seem strange, as he’s not riding in the event. He is, however, still involved in the management of his former team, Discovery Channel, and has already been on hand (and in the team car) for several races this season. His reason for skipping La Grande Boucle? He’s spending time with his family.

(Okay, and he’s got some other gigs going on in July, too.)

But seriously, does he expect us to buy that? When his name is still all over the French press with the word “doping” in the same sentence? If you were him, wouldn’t you want to avoid all that nonsense if you could? And what better way to avoid it than to say you’re going to spend time with your kids?

“Listen, I’ll watch it on TV,” he said. “I’m not trying to make a statement. I’m already traveling a lot next month.”

Sure, Lance. Whatever. Y’know, if you want to say you’re spending time with your kids, or hosting the ESPYs, or whatever you’re doing, that’s fine. But I’m no longer going to be surprised if I see your name on a ballot in the near future.
