Dr. Fuentes: “I’ve got no link with Comunitat Valenciana”

Being associated with Eufemiano Fuentes has become the kiss of death since the doctor’s name has been raised at the center of the Spanish doping scandal called “Operacion Puerto” by the Spanish police. Already, several riders who allegedly visited Fuentes’ clinic have been sidelined by their teams, and a few team officials have been arrested for questioning.

So far, one of the most affected teams is Comunitat Valenciana, whose wildcard Tour de France invitation was withdrawn by the ASO after the team’s assistant sporting director was arrested and taken in for questioning. He has since resigned, but that apparently wasn’t enough for the ASO.

In an interesting move earlier this week, Fuentes spoke with Valencian newspaper Levante when he heard about the withdrawal of the Tour invitation, saying, “This is not an attempt nor a manoeuvre to save Comunitat Valenciana. I’ve got no link with them and it seems absurd that these steps have been taken. What I’m telling you now will become clear in a few months when the ongoing investigation is concluded, but I just wanted you to know this in case someone is listening.” Fuentes insists that his relationship with the Kelme squad (which is now Comunitat Valenciana) ended in 2002.
